Women’s Cancer Center Medical Director Published in Prominent Medical Journal

LAS VEGAS, NV (February 9, 2012) – Women's Cancer Center of Nevada, the only cancer center in Nevada specializing exclusively in the treatment and research of gynecologic cancers, announced today a research paper co-authored by Drs. Nick Spirtos and Aimee Fleury was published in the January 2012 issue of BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Dr. Spirtos serves as Medical Director at Women’s Cancer Center of Nevada and Dr. Fleury is a fellow in gynecologic oncology at Johns Hopkins University who will be joining the Center in August.

The report, titled “Upper abdominal cytoreduction and thoracoscopy for advanced epithelial ovarian cancer: unanswered questions and the impact on treatment,” investigates the use of surgical techniques to treat women suffering from advanced-stage epithelial ovarian cancer. BJOG publishes the highest quality, peer-reviewed research in all areas of obstetrics and gynecology.

“It is an honor to be published in a prestigious medical journal such as BJOG,” Spirtos said. “The physicians at Women's Cancer Center of Nevada are dedicated to aggressively fighting ovarian and other gynecological cancers. This publication demonstrates how aggressive surgery can better define the extent of disease present and allow us to better design individualized care plans. This was one of the preliminary studies in a series of planned research projects designed to correlate radiologic and surgical findings and then identify the underlying gene mutations associated with metastatic ovarian cancer and surgical outcomes.”

The Women's Cancer Center of Nevada is the only full-member institution in the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG) in Nevada and has been one of the leading institutions in this co-operative group. Dr. Spirtos serves as the Chairman of the Gynecologic Oncology Committee in the GOG, and has authored more than 60 peer-reviewed publications.

About Women's Cancer Center
The Women's Cancer Center of Nevada is the only cancer center in Nevada that specializes exclusively in gynecologic cancers, including ovarian, cervical and uterine cancer. As a full member in the Gynecologic Oncology Group, Women's Cancer Center offers both standard approaches and clinical trials for those who qualify. Women's Cancer Center surgeons are pioneers in the research and use of laparoscopic techniques, which, though less invasive, can be as effective as more widely used surgical procedures for treating women with gynecologic cancers. Women's Cancer Center is one of only a handful of major institutions in the country to study this approach.
